Sleep is one of the most underestimated factors that influence your health. Lack of sleep negatively impacts your next-day emotional processing and mood, pain thresholds, immune functioning and glucose metabolism. It makes you dumber, more forgetful, more vulnerable to dementia and more likely to get cancer. Both mind and body are affected.

Even if you are a deep sleeper, what you're exposed to while asleep could impact your health as well. Off-gassing VOCs from flame retardants, chemical-coated metal coils, and solvents used in the glue or cotton and animal products such as wool stuffing, can all add up to a toxic bed, or at least one that could make people who are sensitive to their environment feel worse.

Heveya is a premium bedding brand that specializes in natural organic latex mattresses. 

Stefan Magnus is not a typical start-up founder. He is not a 20 something, bootstrapping, seed fund hunting entrepreneur. He has over 25 years of experience, and believe it or not, in the "mattress business"!

以下是我和Stefan的电话谈话，以及为什么作为素食者的我们，即使在睡觉的时候也可以为环保做贡献。

Here is my phone conversation with Stefan and why as Vegans, we can care about the planet…even in our sleep.

Eve：Stefan，简单介绍一下你自己吧。

Eve: Okay, Stefan, shoot the basics.

我在比利时出生和长大，但是27年来，亚洲一直是我的家。我有一个3岁的儿子，我的妻子是印尼华人。我认为我不是一个典型的在上海做生意的外国人，尤其是我还住在巴厘岛上！

I was born & raised in Belgium but Asia has been my home for 27 years. I have a 3-year-old son and my wife is Indonesian Chinese. I guess, I am also not a typical foreigner running a business in Shanghai, especially as I live in Bali!

Eve: 鉴于你有丰富的生活和商业经验，你本可以开创一项利润丰厚的业务，但你选择了大多数人想不到的东西---环保型床垫。为什么要做环保型的床垫？

Eve: You have immense business experience. You could have started a business that is uber lucrative, but you chose something most would never think of. Eco-friendly mattresses. Why eco-friendly?

嗯，我知道你想问什么，我在想怎么表达才能让自己听起来不像个环保主义者哈哈。我成长的时代，周围环境和海洋都没有被污染，人口没有爆炸，空气里也没有有毒物质。但我记得人们会把烟屁股扔到街上。我想说的是，我生长于消费主义盛行的那一代，大家没有考虑到长期以往的后果。在人生的某个阶段之后，我觉得我需要做点什么来弥补这些伤害，有了孩子也改变了我的生活，我希望我的孩子能像我们在七八十年代那样体验大自然。

Hmmm. I know what you are asking me, but I am struggling to find the words so that I don’t sound like an environmentalist haha. I grew up in a time when the world and the oceans were not polluted, the population was not exploding, the air wasn’t toxic. But I remember how people would toss cigarette buds on the streets. I guess what I am trying to say is that I am from the generation that started the consumeristic behavior and did not think about the long-term consequences. After a certain point in life, I felt I needed to do something to offset the damage. Having a baby changed my life too and want my children to experience nature the way we experienced in the 70s and 80s.

I know too much about the environmental impact of the products [mattresses] of the industry I have been in. I had a calling you can say. And here I am.

Eve: That’s super cool, thank you for sharing! Okay, break it down for me. What makes a mattress eco-friendly?

与大多数床垫材料不同，乳胶是一种天然产品，其固有的柔软性和弹性使它非常适合成为做床垫的材料。你可能见过一些乳胶床垫标有“天然”或“有机”的标签，而其他的只是“乳胶”，为了理解其中的原因，让我们先来看一下乳胶到底是什么。

Unlike most mattress materials, latex is a natural product. Its inherent softness and springiness make it perfectly suited for mattresses. You’ve probably seen some latex mattresses labeled “natural” or “organic”, while others are just “latex”. To understand why let’s first understand what latex is.

乳胶是从橡胶树的汁液中提取的，为了把白色的乳状液体变成床垫，它经历了类似于烤蛋糕的过程：乳胶被倒进一个期望形状的模具里，然后做固化处理（像烘烤一样）直到它凝固。

Latex is harvested from the sap of the rubber tree, Hevea brasiliensis. To turn the white milky liquid into a mattress, it undergoes processing akin to baking a cake: the latex is poured into a mold of the desired shape, and then vulcanized (ie. baked) until it solidifies.

合成乳胶是乳胶的人工仿制品，它不是从天然来源获取的，而是通过化学方法将单个分子(单体)串在一起形成聚合物链。

Synthetic latex is an artificial mimic of latex. Instead of being harvested from a natural source, it is manufactured by chemically stringing together individual molecules (monomers) to form polymer chains.

所有的有机乳胶都是天然的，来自橡胶树，但是，并不是所有的天然乳胶都是有机的，事实上，大多数天然乳胶都不是有机的。

Also, all organic latex is natural, ie. comes from the rubber tree. But not all-natural latex is organic. In fact, most natural latex is not organic.

Eve: Yes, there’s synthetic and natural latex; natural doesn’t mean organic unless certified. But is synthetic latex bad for the environment?

事实上，对于合成乳胶，环保问题并不是我对最关心的。而是，睡在合成乳胶的床垫上可能并不安全，因为它对人体有害。

Actually,  eco-friendly isn’t the top concern I would have about synthetic latex. A synthetic latex mattress might not be considered safe to sleep on. It can be toxic to humans.

Eve：什么？床垫有毒？？

Eve: Wait what? Toxic gases from mattresses??

在合成乳胶床垫的时候会用到很多有毒材料，制造商会教你先让床垫透气几天，释放有害的化学物质。但是，即使这样，之后有毒气体仍会继续排放，且无法检测到到底排放了多少数量。

There are many toxic ingredients used for synthetic latex mattresses. Manufacturers will instruct you to let the mattress air out for a few days, to release the harmful chemicals. However, the off-gassing will still continue in undetectable amounts.

合成乳胶通常由苯乙烯和丁二烯两种基于石油的化合物制成。所以，合成乳胶床垫确实会释放气体，床垫里的化学物质和挥发性有机化合物会挥发到你所呼吸的空气中。

Synthetic latex is usually made using two petroleum-based compounds – styrene and butadiene. So, yes, synthetic latex mattresses do off-gas, due to the chemicals in the mattress and the volatile organic compounds which disburse into the air that you breathe.

Eve：好吧，我今晚就检查一下我的床垫是用什么做的。(OMG !) 好的，那么普通的天然乳胶有什么问题吗？我为什么要关心它是否有机？

Eve: Alright, I am checking what my mattress is made of tonight. [OMG!] Okay, so what’s wrong with regular natural latex? Why should I care about organic?

有机乳胶的生产受到严格的管制，要获得有机认证，乳胶必须在没有任何化学农药或化肥的特殊种植园中种植。整个生产过程中使用的配料也受到严格控制，虽然无法确切地知道每棵树的确切位置，但我们可以知晓每个床垫中的有机乳胶产自哪里，以及它是如何产生的。 

The production of organic latex is very tightly regulated. To be certified organic, the latex must be grown in a special plantation without any chemical pesticides or fertilizers. The ingredients used throughout the production process are also strictly controlled. Short of knowing the exact coordinates of the tree, we know where the organic latex in each mattress comes from and exactly how it was produced.

为了确保床垫只使用100%的有机乳胶，最好向商家索要GOLS(全球有机乳胶标准)证书证明。

To be certain that a mattress uses only 100% organic latex, ask for the GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard) certificate.

Eve：但是有机乳胶太贵了，不是吗?

Eve: But isn’t Organic too expensive?

有机的对我们的环境会更好，有机乳胶的高价可以在保护自然资源上得到回馈。它避免了化学农药对环境的破坏，这些化学物质可能渗入并污染周围的土地或水体，随着时间的推移，如果土壤中积累了这些化学物质，最终就会变得无法使用，那么宝贵的土地就会被浪费掉。

Organic is better for our environment. The higher price that organic latex commands is fed back into preserving our natural resources. Organic latex avoids the environmental damage caused by chemical pesticide use. These chemicals may leech into and contaminate surrounding land or water bodies. If the soil accumulates these chemicals over time and eventually becomes unusable, that precious land goes to waste.

Eve：但在生产的过程中，还是会有某种形式的碳足迹吧？

Eve: That is great, but this is manufacturing, there will be the carbon footprint of some sort?

实际上，我们是碳中和的，这也是经过认证的。

We are carbon neutral actually. And we are also certified for the same.

任何制造过程对环境的影响都可以通过其碳足迹来衡量，对于我们产品中使用的所有有机乳胶，其生产过程是经过碳中和认证的，这意味着零排放和零碳足迹。我们同时还向致力于拯救热带雨林的非盈利组织捐款。

The overall environmental impact of any manufacturing process can be measured by its carbon footprint. For all organic latex used in our products, the production process is certified carbon-neutral, which means net-zero emissions and no carbon footprint. We also donate to non-profit organizations fighting to save our rainforests.

所以，作为一个素食主义者，我认为保护环境是你的目标之一，如果你是认真的，当然，如果有经济能力的话，那么你应该考虑买一个。

So, as a vegan, I am thinking protecting the environment would be one of your goals. If you really mean that and of course, if you can afford a good quality mattress like ours, then you should think of investing in one.

Centexbel, a Research Centre in Belgium, certifies that our latex bedding products are mold-resistant and bacteria-resistant.

Eve: Okay, knowing that my mattress would have won all these awards, will make me feel calmer, I guess. What else can your mattresses do?
